Improving Services at Minehead Medical Centre
The Care Quality Commission (CQC), published an inspection report for Minehead Medical Centre on 10 July, following an inspection that took place in December 2023, when the practice was run by previous provider.
Since January the practice is being led and managed on an interim twelve-month contract by One Medical Group.
The team at the Practice and One Medical have been working hard to remedy the issues identified by the CQC. NHS Somerset has been supporting the Practice and One Medical Group to ensure that primary care services at Minehead Medical Centre are safe, and effective. Patients can be confident that their healthcare needs will be met and that ongoing improvements will continue to be made.
NHS Somerset has set up a dedicated helpline for Minehead Medical Centre to help patients who have any questions or concerns. You can contact the dedicated helpline on 0300 303 6409 (open Monday – Friday 8.30am-5pm).
Here is how we have been working together to improve services at the Practice to address issues raised in the CQC inspection report.
Improving services
Creating a stronger leadership
Minehead Medical Centre has been managed by One Medical since January 2024. During this time a new local leadership team has been appointed at Minehead Medical Centre with support from NHS Somerset.
The new local leadership team includes Lead GP Dr Peter Bagshaw and Operations Manager Katheryn Antonelli.
Improving medicines management
A review of patients who are prescribed regular medication is underway.
We are aware that some patients may be overdue for their annual follow ups due to the recent focus on maintaining same day access to the surgery and processes at the practice are being reviewed to identify patients that may fall into this category. You may be contacted by the Practice and asked to attend a consultation, blood test, or be offered a telephone review where identified.
Repeat prescriptions have now been extended so patients can now receive two month’s medicine when they order a repeat prescription.
A safe, secure and well-led practice
The Practice has a new senior management team who work at the Practice.
Weekly meetings have been taking place with One Medical Group leadership team, to ensure oversight and support the team at Minehead Medical Centre to implement changes to address concerns identified by the CQC.
One Medical Group has undertaken a review of staff working at the practice, to ensure that they are working in a safe and effective way and that they have the necessary skills and training to perform their role.
Better communication
A feedback noticeboard has been set up in the reception area, for patients to provide feedback on service. A patient newsletter has been developed, to keep up to date with changes at the Practice.
Minehead Medical Centre will be switching over to a cloud-based telephony system which will give patients more access to staff through dedicated lines/desks.
The practice is providing support and guidance for patients who want to use the NHS app. Use of the app will make it easier for patients to access their clinical records, view test results, make appointments and order repeat prescriptions online.
The reception team has implemented a new triage process, to allow patients to be directed to the most appropriate place to access care.
Safeguarding
Minehead Medical Centre has adopted the safeguarding policies and procedures used by One Medical Group (who are managing the Practice on an interim basis) and is improving its safeguarding response for vulnerable adults, children and families.
While the Practice is developing capacity within its safeguarding team, it is being supported by NHS Somerset’s safeguarding team.
